Before Traverse City
John Rizzo has been an elder law attorney in northern Michigan for over 20-years. He has lived in Traverse City with his family since 1998. Born in Detroit, and raised in Waterford, Michigan, John experienced Miami, Florida, and Atlanta, Georgia during school before ending up back in Detroit to finish law school. After seeing much of the eastern United States, John decided Traverse City was the best fit for him, and maintains that belief to this day.
Focusing on Elder Law
John Rizzo focused his practice on Medicaid planning, veterans benefits, and estate planning. He is a VA accredited attorney and has been a trail blazer of innovative Medicaid planning. John Rizzo sold his law firm, Rizzo & Associates, PLC, in 2010 so he could work part-time while focusing on homeschooling is two children. When both children entered public school, he went back to work at another law firm in Traverse City, experiencing life as an employee for the first time since 2000.
John Rizzo decided to open a new law firm, maintaining the same focus on Medicaid planning, veterans benefits, and estate planning, but with an additional mission to provide more help to his community. That mission resulted in the three pronged charitable plan of Up North Elder Law, PLC, which can be read about in more detail here.
Training Elder Law Attorneys
John Rizzo has trained six other Traverse City elder law attorneys and several attorneys from other states. He enjoys teaching others, teaching legal writing and researching at Northwestern Michigan College. John Rizzo presents at seminars regularly and spoke at a national convention of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.
He serves on the board of the Grand Traverse County Department of Health and Human Services. He has served on the Traverse City Human Rights Commission and volunteers regularly at his children’s schools.
